UGC NET English Coaching in Chandigarh ntaugcnet June 04, 2022

UGC NET English is one of the most content-oriented subjects in the entire UGC NET examination because of its vast coverage of subjects such as drama, poetry, prose, literary theory, criticism, and linguistics. Success for UGC NET English does not depend on the amount of reading but on the way in which syllabus has been prepared by the aspirant. In our NTA UGC NET Academy located in Chandigarh, we follow unit-wise learning along with testing and doubt clearing sessions.

About the UGC NET Exam

UGC NET is the National Eligibility Test that is carried out by the NTA on behalf of University Grants Commission and it is designed to find out the eligibility of candidates for the post of Assistant Professor and Junior Research Fellowship (JRF). The examination takes place twice a year in the month of June and December and is held online.

Exam Pattern for UGC NET English

The exam consists of two papers, taken together in a single sitting:

Paper Nature Marks
Paper 1 General paper (common to all subjects — teaching aptitude, research aptitude, reasoning, comprehension, ICT, etc.) 100
Paper 2 Subject paper — English literature, theory, and linguistics 200
Total   300

Each question carries 2 marks, and there is no negative marking. Because Paper 1 is common to every subject, many aspirants underestimate it — but a strong Paper 1 score is often what separates a qualifying rank from a JRF-level rank.

UGC NET English Syllabus — Unit by Unit

The English literature syllabus is spread across ten units, moving from literary forms to theory and finally to research skills:

  1. Drama – from Elizabethan era up to modern and post-modern period
  2. Poetry – major schools of poetry and significant poets throughout history
  3. Fiction and Short Stories – rise of novel and development of short stories
  4. Non-Fiction Prose – letters, biographies, essays, and other prose genres
  5. Language, Grammar and Teaching of English Language – key linguistic concepts
  6. English in India – Indian literature in English and its evolution
  7. Cultural Studies – the relation between literature, culture, and society
  8. Literary Criticism and Theory until World War II – the classical and early modern period of criticism
  9. Literary Theory after World War II – structuralism, post-structuralism, post-colonialism, etc.
  10. Research Methods and Materials in English – academic writing and research competence in the subject

The first four units also test comprehension — passages are used to assess critical reading and interpretive skill, not just factual recall.

(Always cross-check unit names against the current official NTA syllabus PDF before publishing, since UGC updates units periodically.)
